There’s a lot of stiff competition for the title of our overall best in this list, but Trace wins for a few reasons; notably due to its structure in the mash used to make it. Buffalo Trace uses a high amount of corn in its mash and not as much rye as other bourbons in the field. This gives Buffalo Trace a good structure and balanced flavor without the spice variation and dryness of other more rye-infused products. Bottled at 90 Proof, Buffalo Trace has the strength to stand on its own or be mixed into a cocktail with its own signature style, but without making the experience unpleasant.

If you’re looking for something with a little bit more flavor power, Old Forester is definitely your best value. With Old Forester you’re getting a strong and quality bourbon that is above the standard level. Old Forester does have multiple ABV products but the 100 proof is arguably its best value. In terms of Mixology, this product falls a bit short as its strength is just too overpowering compared to its peers, but on its own it’s able to stand up well. I would recommend having this on the rocks as the ice will let the flavor expand a bit over its proof.

Time to bite the bullet and experience Bulleit for yourself. This brand comes with a higher rye content than your typical bourbon, making Bulleit a little sweeter but dryer on the finish. It mixes well but the flavor does hang around in your cocktails a bit, so choose a cocktail that’s spirit forward. On its own’ Bulleit holds up well and its rich, complex taste makes a positive and lasting impression on the newcomer to its brand.
Best Value Bourbon #5: Wild Turkey
